Choate Rosemary Hall Issues Apology for Longstanding Sexual Abuse

Choate Rosemary Hall, a prestigious boarding school in Wallingford, has issued a formal apology after uncovering a history of sexual abuse involving its faculty and staff.

The apology comes in response to a comprehensive 50-page report that followed a seven-month independent investigation commissioned by the school.

The investigation, which explored allegations dating from 1963 to 2010, revealed detailed accounts of abuse from 24 former students.

These allegations involve inappropriate behavior such as:

  • Kissing;
  • Unwanted touching;
  • Sexual intercourse; and,
  • Instances of coerced sex by 12 faculty members.

In its statement, Choate Rosemary Hall expressed deep remorse for the egregious breaches of trust by the adults responsible for the students' welfare.

The school vowed to reassess and enhance its policies to better safeguard students in the future.

The report did not implicate any current faculty members.

Inquiry Background

The school initiated this investigation following a 1992 alumna's report of severe misconduct involving a faculty member.

Around the same period, other institutions faced scrutiny over similar allegations.

A local attorney was enlisted to lead an independent inquiry, interviewing 101 people, including former students and current and past faculty.

The report highlights the painful experiences of 24 former students and reveals that while some misconduct reports were addressed swiftly, others were mishandled.

Many victims chose not to report their abuse at the time due to a lack of confidence in being believed by the faculty.

Legal Responsibilities and Reporting

Connecticut law mandates that educators and school staff report any suspected child abuse or neglect to the Department of Children and Families (DCF).

This reporting requirement has been in place since 1965, and teachers have been included as mandatory reporters since 1967.

Despite this legal obligation, Choate did not report any instances of faculty sexual misconduct to DCF before 2010.

In 2016, the school submitted complaints to DCF concerning some cases highlighted in the report, but these were dismissed because the individuals involved were no longer minors.
